Collaboration

Comment about the nature of collaborative work.  What are the features of working with other people.  Why is it important to collaborate.  Why is collaboration such an important aspect of filmmaking?

  1. Collaborative work is cooperative. Teammates come together to create a large-scale art piece. The process can be long and tedious but is usually worth it in the end. Everyone must communicate appropriately to ensure mistakes are reduced to a minimum. Production can become expensive and any lack of communication will hinder the quality and time of production. It's important to collaborate when a team is looking to create an impressive project that could not be done single-handedly. Collaboration is a really important aspect of filmmaking due to the immense scale of the art project. There is a lot involved in filmmaking that could go wrong if there are not directors for each department of the film, such as the DP, the director for the actors, the production designer, the producer. If everyone was trying to do each job at the same time it would not work out as each person's work would be watered down. It is important to have strong quality in a film, and the collaborative process best facilitates that notion.

  2. I thought that this week was one of the most interesting weeks throughout all of the TMP 3 presentations. I was immediately drawn in by the "history of pillows" animation, which alone did NOT seem like a collaboration piece. the cohesiveness and the flow of the piece worked so well; the drawings looked purposefully and playfully juvenile, and the plot cute and creative. I think that as a whole, collaborative pieces are extremely interesting because the ideas of many are all combining into one. the work of many different people are coming together to form one cohesive piece. Over all, i was extremely impressed with the presentation this week and am excited to make a collaborative piece of my own.

  3. Collaborative work can create complicated works with efficiency and success. It is important to collaborate because you want to make sure every detail in your piece is strong and successful. For instance, if a filmmaker wanted to create a piece on dancing, then in order for it to be successful, he would ask or pay professional dancers to portray his idea. If this filmmakers strength is only shooting video and he wanted music in the piece, then he would ask an audio professional to edit and create the sound for the film.

  4. Collaboration seems to be almost a necessity for time based media. You can collaborate with an unknown, with one or two other people, small groups, or large groups. In filmmaking collaboration is so important because there are so many things that go into filmmaking. There is the concept, then the execution, you need to film images, sound is something that needs to be well thought out, then there is editing. Someone has to know how to do all of those different things. If you are filming people then you obviously need to collaborate from that because one has to film while the other performs. Maybe the performance is dance. If the artist cannot dance, then you need to find a dancer. The sound is important to work with someone because you need to go out and find certain sounds, or maybe it would be better for your piece to have music, then you have to find a musician to do your piece for you.
There are a ton of ways collaboration is important to filmmaking and I think you will have the most range and ability to create your vision if you collaborate with others.

  5. I believe that collaboration thrives when all members of the group are open minded and willing to listen. It's hard to work on a piece of art with other people because it is such a personal expression. It's important when you work with other people that you let your artistic ego go a little and allow yourself to truly explore other people's ideas. You might never realize how awesome they could be and how you could positively contribute and enhance them. Collaboration is an important aspect of filmmaking because there are so many skillets that are required for a film. For example, handling the equipment, directing, acting, artistic design, sound and more. Unless you are super human, it's necessary to work with other people and utilize their talents. Dividing up the jobs makes the personal weight on you less burdensome as well.

  6. I really like the idea of collaborative work. I have never done anything like that before but I think it would be interesting. Although this is true, I think it would be very difficult to work with other people on art work. So many people have different ideas and thoughts about what they like so it would be hard for everyone to have one united idea about a piece. It is important to collaborate with other people because you learn new techniques and can get new inspiration. It is also helpful if the people you collaborate with are skilled in one area in particular because they can contribute to that part. Collaboration is such an important aspect of filmmaking because collaborators can have different ways of editing and special talents that can improve the overall piece tremendously.

  7. Collaboration offers a beneficial element to creating artwork. By working with other people, new perspectives, experiences, skills, and opinions are introduced into the artistic process. These new additions may help create a more intricate and developed piece of artwork. Working with others may allow for a more holistic approach to the art making process. Sometimes working when a person works individually, they can get caught up in their vision and may not recognize how their art and vision correspond to a fresh audience. This is where working with others is beneficial. By including multiple people, it can be easier to prevent artist bias and may allow for a more well rounded work of art. Collaboration is particularly helpful when it comes to filmmaking. This is because, not only are the artistic tools needed for filming easier to use with multiple people, but also because filmmaking is a very sensory art, therefor the addition of multiple perspectives is very helpful.

  8. As a new artist, I have not collaborated much at all. This is a new experience, along with film making. Through this process, I have found that collaboration is an important aspect of art & film making in particular. Often times pieces are too large or ambitious to take on alone, from the equipment to the physical piece. In film making, there are so many aspects from sound to lighting, to filming to editing that must be done, that it is beyond valuable to have more than one artist working on it. I know personally, that I am not the strongest in every single area of a film, and it would be helpful to have another person help me in order to create the best project. Finally, there is the fact that in time based media, we watch or listen to a piece so many times it almost becomes white noise. We know whats coming next, what to expect, and start to become blind to errors or imperfections. Through collaboration it brings a new insight & viewpoint to the piece.

  9. I think collaborative work is really important to filmmaking. For the reason that collaborating thoughts and ideas from more than one people can really broaden the brainstorming process. In the stop motion film that I did with my partner, I found it so much easier to develop new ideas while discussing the topic before production or solving the issue during shooting and editing. Another reason is that filmmaking's nature of being an complicated and time consuming work that would be accomplished easier and better with multiple people working together. Another thing is that filmmaking is a time-based type of work which requires the audience's participation and sometimes interaction with the piece. So it becomes an collaborative work of a new meaning.

  10. Collaboration is very important in the creative field. As artists, we are mostly alone when we work, and we can get lost in our own thoughts. It can be very refreshing to work with another artist so you can bounce ideas off each other. I think ideas or concepts that are created from a group of people are stronger and more complex. In filmmaking, collaboration is very important because the process of filming itself can be very time consuming. When you work with other people, you can get a lot more work done quickly. Plus, it goes back to the idea that concepts and ideas are stronger when it is thought out by a large group of people. In film, it is so important to have a very clear and strong concept, so that is why collaboration is essential in filmmaking.

  11. She talked about different kinds of collaborations such as collaborations with small and large groups, with unknown, and etc. Although it sometimes is more difficult to collaborate with others than to work alone, a lot of people still tend to work together because of some of the importances of collaboration. By collaborating with others, they can share their common goals, tools and ideas, and shortens the work time because they can divide the tasks/jobs. I also think that collaboration helps people to have better idea about the projects that they create since they have more ideas than when they work by themselves, just as we benefit from critiquing each other's works. I think collaboration especially plays a role in the aspect of filmmaking because we are not good at everything. There are always others who are better than us. Some people might be better at acting. And also, it might be very difficult for us to film ourselves acting. Thus, because there are so many jobs that are needed to be worked together, collaboration is such an important aspect of filmmaking.

  12. Collaboration is absolutely necessary for filmmaking. There are always someone who is better at being creative or filming or creating sound, or even just cleaning the area to shoot. One person cannot handle everything at once when filmmaking. In the lecture, Jessica showed films that was made by many people, and I was very impressed by them. There were more than five people working together, and all of them seemed cooperating. When I was filming my video, I definitely needed people helping me. I could have not filmed it if there were people helping me. It was a lot easier with people's help.

  13. Collaborative work has the ability for people to combine ideas, skills, and physical work to create a well-rounded product. Working with other people, you have to relinquish some control and open your mind to other ideas and ways of capturing what you originally wanted. It can consist of designating the actual work to different people based on their interest or skill set. But it is important to find common time to actually work together rather than just splitting off for the same project. It is important to collaborate because you can often create a better product if you have more input than just that of yourself or one artist. If two or more people are working together they can better predict how an audience will react, because they are not just working inside their own heads. Brainstorming with other people is a really useful aspect of collaboration. Just introducing a few ideas from each person can contribute to a large flow of ideas and ultimately the best way to complete a project. Along with these concepts, collaboration is especially an important aspect of filmmaking because of the nature and scope of the medium. It takes a lot to create a film piece, including sound recording, visual recording, and the subjects of both those things. You can accomplish much more in a team for filmmaking. Specifically, if you need people with skills you don't possess for the subjects of your sound or visual, collaboration is necessary.

  14. What I found most interesting about Jessica's presentation about collaboration was when she outlined the four different types of collaborations. These are collaboration with one person, collaboration with an unknown participant, collaboration with a small group, and collaboration with a large group. I realized, through her presentation, just how very different these four types of collaboration are. I thought back to my experiences with each type of collaboration and tried to decide which type had worked best for me. But no one type really stood out as the most effective answer to the problem of collaboration. Each worked well in some areas, and not so well in others. I think that large group collaboration worked really well in her example of the Tiny Circus. I think that what was most important about this group was that they all shared a common goal that they felt really passionate about. They also all seemed to be open to feedback. Collaboration requires a constant give and take that comes from a willingness to make mistakes and have others correct you. Collaboration is important and helpful in this way because it allows for constant critique and subsequent growth. Collaboration is important in the field of filmmaking because there is simply so much that needs to be controlled: the image, audio and pacing or the video. One collaborator may notice a problem or have an idea that another collaborator would not have even thought to focus on.

  15. Collaboration requires at the very least, flexibility, open-mindedness, and an ability to listen as well as express ideas. It means that a project may change drastically every time it is worked on. This is mainly due to the nature of working with other people - the more brains there are that work to solve a problem or create a project, the more diverse the ideas and often, the more quickly, efficiently, and effectively the task can be solved/created. The importance of this is that something that could never have been thought of or created otherwise has the potential to exist and thrive. People rarely come up with brilliant ideas completely on their own; it often takes debate, hard work, and looking at other alternatives and influences from other people's ideas to find something novel. There's a saying that nothing is ever made now that has not been made in some way before - that ideas are almost always inspired by or derived from some previous idea thought up by someone else. Scientists build on the work of previous scientists. Artists are influenced by artistic movements, politics, and past/present works and events. In film-making especially, collaboration is key in almost all productions, whether in pre-production, production, post, or distribution. Film-making in particular requires such a variety of skills and often requires more than one person at a time in production - that collaboration is extremely common. Without collaboration and cooperation, most of the greatest creations and discoveries of humankind would still be but vague thoughts and mysteries.

  16. Collaborative work displays the efforts of multiple people. It is rich with ideas, considering each person brings his or her own to the table. A person is able to share their idea's with their partners, and also gather information for new potential projects. It also helps to form new connections with people and audiences, and I would think in some aspects it is a route for a better piece.

In filmmaking, the sound artist could hold more skill in the audio portion of a film, whereas the video taper knows which light looks best where and at what angle. Because each person holds his or her own role, he or she is able to focus solely on that part of production making it easier to perfect that section. This causes the final film to be a concrete piece.

  17. Collaboration, even though frustrating, can be a great aspect to have when creating projects. Collaboration gives you the chance to have other inputs and ideas that may formulate a whole new take on a project. Not only do you have the chance to receive more ideas and concepts, but you also have help with the use equipment and filming. Collaboration spreads the role or responsibility so that you can tackle more than what you could do by yourself. This speeds the process of pre-production and post-production as well.

  18. Collaboration is an essential part of the creative process. Yesterdays lecture was very beneficial in making me understand the nature of collaborative work and how important it is in creating a finished product. Collaboration is necessary for one person is not capable of doing all things in a effective manner. Especially in working with video, multiple components present themselves that relative to collaboration such as sound, performance and camera work.
Yesterdays lecture taught me how important meetings and communication are to the collaborative process. Communication is key to understanding others thoughts and idea. Story boarding and planning are also extremely important in creating a finished product that all group members are proud of. Patience is also an essential part of collaboration, for everyone has different skill sets. and talents.

  19. Collaboration is a very important aspect in art making and quite frankly everyday life. Collaboration is a great tool to open your mind and experience new forms and notions through the experiences and knowledge of others. Many times, tasks of great magnitude and time require a group of people to successfully complete the project in an effective manner. When creative minds are put together, amazing stuff tends to be created, as it serves a melting pot of different talents and views. With collaboration also comes maturity and strong communication skills, without these essentials a successful collaboration is nearly impossible. In the post production process, collaboration is key, as editing a film can be filled with uncertainty, tedious cuts and long hours.

  20. Collaboration can be defined as "coming together to work toward a common vision." The collaborative process is devoted to move the people who take part in an activity away from the traditional definition of power and domination by a small group or individual and allow shared authority to take place. This results in greater achievements than those that would be attained by one organization working alone. This process allows many ideas from different perspectives to join together to create something wonderful. This diversity allows individuals to get inspired from the viewpoints and ideas that come from others. This mechanism ultimately results in greater accomplishments across the globe.
